Monday, Dec 10, 2012

NIOC will expand exploratory activities over next year by deploying eight drilling rigs, exploration manager at National Iranian Oil Company (NOC) said here on Saturday.

Elaborating on exploratory activities, Hormoz Qalavand said exploration activities were under way in south west of the country near the Azadegan oilfield in the depth of 3500 to 4000 meters adding the results would be announced after doing necessary oil tests.

He said exploration in south west of the country, near Khozestan province as wells as Lorestan and Fars provinces, were among the priorities of the NIOC’s exploration department in quest of finding new oil and gas reserves.

Exploration is also under way in central part of the country but it is in an early stage that includes geologic and geophysics activities, Qalavand said.

Currently six drilling rigs are involved in exploratory activities across the country and two others will join the fleet next year, the NIOC official told Shana.

According to the official another drilling rig is conducting exploratory activities in northeast of the country near the border with Turkmenistan in search of gas reserves.

He said geological and geophysical assessments had ended in Khangiran and Gonbadli fields in northeast of the country and the company was studying a plan related to starting drilling operations in the area.

He stressed on development of shared oil and gas fields either in offshore of onshore sector as one the top priorities of the company.

Last year’s exploration activities led to discovery of five oil and gas fields including Khayyam oil field and Medar and Sardare Jangle gas fields.

Overall, 2.870 million barrels of oil and 847 billion cubic meters of gas were found last year, respectively 2.6 and 3 times more than the fifth five year development plan targets.
